The Technique of Growing Vietnamese Star Anise

Stage under 5 years old star anise tree is not resistant to direct sunlight. At 8 years old, the anise begins to flowering, fruiting, the light demand is also increasing. At 20 years of age or older, the anise require full light from the sun.

1. Tree planting techniques:

a. Land

- Star Anise requires to be planted on good soil with thick layer, pH = 4.5, high humus content (> 3%) stable moisture all year round, good drainage. Star anise should not be grown on argillaceous limestone, low acid or neutral, sandy soil, thin soil and soil erosion.
- The most suitable soil for star anise cultivation is red soils. They can also be planted in woodlands, in poor potash land and in open grassland.
- Star anise should be planted in hilly slopes with relatively thick soil surface, sufficient nutrients.

b. Light/ Sun light

Stage under 5 years old star anise tree is not resistant to direct sunlight. At 8 years old, the anise begins to flowering, fruiting, the light demand is also increasing. At 20 years of age or older, the anise require full light from the sun.

c. Water

At 1-3 years of age, star anise tree needs a lot of water, because it is the plant that need high moisture.  At maturity (over 10 years of age), star anise is moderately drought tolerant and adaptable to different water supply conditions of the environment.

2. Seasonality and density 

- The best growing season is in spring or rainy season.
- Planting density ranges from 400-500 trees / ha.
- Planting holes need to be 50-60cm deep, 50-60cm wide, 5-10kg organic fertilizer application and grass clearance around. After planting, watering for enough moisture, then do the shading. It is advisable to keep the available trees around to make more shade. Later, clearing up the trees base on the scale and age of star anise tree. In the early years it is possible to plant sweet potatoes, beans, cassava or tea to take advantage of the excess soil and prevent erosion.

3. Fertilizer

For star anise to grow well, high fruit yield, organic fertilizer + Better NPK 12-12-17-9 + TE (about 15-20 kg / tree) should be applied annually, at the stage before flowering and after harvesting fruit. When apply fertilizer, you need to dig the groove around the canopy, spread the fertilizer and fill the soil, clear the grass, remove the surrounding vines and shrubs.
Good fertilization, plants grow smoothly, fruit yield will be high.
